This volume, although a tribute, is designed for historical reference to perpetuate the faces of men largely famous in their day. Their deeds have elsewhere been but faintly chronicled because of the absurd and inviolable rule of professional etiquette which has for a century and a half robbed this most genial, courtly, and unselfish class of men of their just dues in our printed records. All of those portrayed here are worthy of individual biographies; some have been martyrs to their sense of duty. Many are heroes. There are few New Yorkers who have not at some time owed their life or their health to one or more of these men
